Google Moves Into Offline Television Advertising
The Web giant announced on that it is partnering with EchoStar Communications to sell commercials over the Dish satellite broadcaster’s 125 national programming networks, an early indicator of how the Internet giant plans to use its $10.6 billion online-ad business to conquer television. Under the EchoStar deal, advertisers will use Google’s AdWords automated auction interface to bid on ad spots. Advertisers can upload their TV commercials and select the desired time of day and channel, as well as choose regional or national area coverage. The official word from Google said they will run a trial of targeted video advertising with a couple of outlets: EchoStar, which operates the DISH Network, and Astound Cable, a small operation in Northern California.
When it comes to overnight success stories, Michael Dell’s is certainly one for the books. After all, how many 19-year-old college kids manage to rack up nearly $6 million in first-year sales by storming the walls of an industry giant like IBM? The answer is not many. Add to the story that he started with a mere $1,000 and was working from his college dorm room, and the story becomes one of legend. Not bad for a college dropout.
