Berkeley DB Java Edition Architecture

Berkeley DB Java Edition is a 100% native Java, high-performance transactional database. It was designed to be functionally compatible with the ubiquitous, open source Berkeley DB and architecturally compatible with Java applications. This paper presents the design and implementation of Berkeley DB Java Edition (JE), focusing on how it provides fast, reliable storage services when embedded in applications that run in a JVM. JE uses a log-structured disk representation for its database objects, avoiding unnatural marshalling of objects onto pages. The combination of object-level caching and log-structured storage permits fine-grain latching and record-level locking for highly concurrent applications.

Spotlight on Oracle: Key Findings From the 2005 WinterCorp TopTen Program

The results of the 2005 WinterCorp TopTen survey reinforce the theme of previous WinterCorp research - large databases are growing and will continue to grow. The largest database in the survey has grown exponentially, having tripled in size every two years since 2001. The 2005 results also reveal significant strengths for Oracle in the Very Large DataBase (VLDB) market, across multiple operating platforms and for both Data Warehouse (DW) and Transaction Processing (OLTP) systems. This paper examines results of the 2005 TopTen Program, which include 175 validated survey responses - with a particular focus on the 102 validated responses submitted by Oracle users.
